Open access agreement for authors at eligible institutions in Virginia, USA

Publish open access with Wiley

Corresponding authors affiliated with participating VIVA institutions in Virginia, USA may publish open access in any of Wiley hybrid journals or Wiley fully gold open access journals1 at no charge to the author. If grant funds are available to cover publication costs, those should be used in lieu of VIVA funds.

All valid requests for publication costs for articles in Wiley fully gold open access journals will be approved. Requests for articles in hybrid journals will be approved if funds are available.

Publishing open access:

  • Complies with funder or institution mandates
  • Allows you to retain copyright through a CC-BY license
  • Enables automatic deposit in PubMed Central (when appropriate)



To be eligible:

  • You must be the
    responsible corresponding authorThe responsible corresponding author is the author who manages the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process - from submission through publication. This author has the authority to act on behalf of all the co-authors and will also be the contact for inquiries after publication.
    who is affiliated with an eligible institution in the state of Virginia at the point of acceptance2
  • Your article must be primary research or a review article3
  • You must publish open access (in a Wiley fully gold OA journal1 or a hybrid journal that offers open access) by using our order workflow as described below4
  • Your manuscript must have been accepted on or after 1 January 2024
  • This agreement cannot be used to cover additional charges (e.g. cover, color, and page charges), which individual journals administer separately

1For fully open access journals, only Wiley fully open access journals are eligible; Hindawi journal APCs will not be covered as part of the VIVA agreement. You can filter our Open Access APC list to only view Wiley journals.

4If you don't order open access initially, your manuscript will be published under the traditional closed access model. You may order open access retroactively, but once your paper is published in Early View or In Issue online you are no longer eligible to publish open access at no charge.
