Open access agreement for authors at eligible Australia and New Zealand institutions

Publish open access with Wiley

From 1 January 2022, authors affiliated with institutions in Australia and New Zealand that are participating in Wiley’s Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) agreement may publish in Wiley’s journals that offer open access, with no transactional Article Publication Charges (APC).

You can be confident that by choosing open access, your work will have the best chance to be read, cited and shared. Read more about the advantages of publishing open access.

Update October 2024: Funding is no longer available for authors wishing to publish open access via the Wiley-CAUL agreement. The agreement has reached its maximum article allowance for 2024. Authors who wish to publish open access and pay for their articles’ APC are eligible for a 10% discount. Please contact your institution’s library if you have any questions.

To be eligible:

  • The
responsible corresponding authorThe responsible corresponding author is the author who manages the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process - from submission through publication. This author has the authority to act on behalf of all the co-authors and will also be the contact for inquiries after publication.
must be currently affiliated with an eligible CAUL member institution at the point of acceptance. Authors should select the institute that they are currently affiliated to. Authors without a current affiliation to an eligible institution may not be able to publish open access under this agreement, and other routes for publishing will be offered.1
  • Responsible corresponding authors should use an institutional email address for a CAUL member institution when submitting their article. You may need to update your Wiley profile to do so.
  • Responsible corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the open access APC coverage request for the article to be published open access under the terms of the agreement.
  • You must publish open access in a hybrid (subscription) journal that offers open access, or submit your article to a fully open access journal.
  • Your article must be primary research or a review article.2
  • For hybrid journals, you must order hybrid open access by using the order workflow on Wiley Author Services.3
  • For fully open access journals, please refer to and follow the steps laid out in this guide, or declare your affiliated institutions when requested during the submission process, to submit your article’s open access APC to said institutions4.
  • Your manuscript must have been accepted for publication in a hybrid (subscription) journal on or after 1 January 2022, or submitted to a fully open access journal on or after 1 January 2023.5,6
  • Responsible corresponding authors applying to CAUL institutions for APC funding coverage for their articles should also ensure that the published version of their articles include the funding institutions in their listed affiliations.
  • This agreement cannot be used to cover additional charges (e.g. color or page charges), which individual journals administer separately.

Additional information and questions

Please refer to this guide on CAUL’s website for more information or contact your university or library if you have any questions.

1Eligibility is subject to when the institution has formalized their participation in the agreement. If you are no longer affiliated with an eligible institution at the point of acceptance of your paper in a hybrid journal or submission to fully open access titles, you do not qualify.

2Other article types e.g. letters, editorials etc. are excluded. Please refer to this full list of article classifications and their eligibility for open access APC coverage under the agreement.

3If you don't order open access initially, your manuscript will be published under the traditional closed access model. You may order open access retroactively, but once your paper is published in Early View or In Issue online you are no longer eligible to publish open access at no charge.

4Fully open access journals are included in this agreement from 2023 onwards.

5For submissions by CAUL affiliated authors to hybrid journals that transitioned to fully open access within 2022, the articles’ APCs will either be waived or routed to CAUL participating institutions for review, under CAUL’s agreement in 2023, subject to the articles’ acceptance date.

6For both hybrid and fully open access journals, articles that have been published in Early View or In Issue Online will no longer be eligible for coverage under CAUL’s agreement.
